Nephrology W1D5

Today we had a short day and only followed up with patients that we have been seeing all week. Most of them have been discharged but some remain in the hospital due to complications of their diagnoses.

A 75 y.o. female came in with a perirenal hematoma 12 days ago. Complications of this hematoma are multiple fevers and itchy skin that has been treated with topical ointment fulosin, a bacteriostatic antibiotic. Today she had acute urticaria on her arms. Dr. Chen thinks it is a reaction to the drugs she is on and gave her ceftriaxone. This is the first time that I have seen a Type IV delayed reaction in person. The urticaria presented in plaques, which are raised skin lesions. We haven't had dermatology yet but a lot of the patients we have seen have had itchy skin reactions. One of the symptoms of uremia is itchy skin due to the chemical imbalances. It shows how the kidney can affect so many parts of the body.
